Pregnancy hormones are the root cause of your skin changes. The fluctuations can cause your skin to either dry out or produce more oily acne-prone skin.
Therefore, old wives’ tales claim that if you do not have a surge in acne, you may be carrying a BOY. If you are breaking out all over your face and body, and you normally do not have excessive acne, you may be carrying a GIRL! (They say girls steal their mother’s looks)
More body appearance changes:
- Areola (skin around the nipple) becomes dark=BOY. Areola unchanged predicts GIRL.
- Face shape appears long and lean=BOY. Face shape is round=GIRL.
- Right breast is larger than the left=BOY. Left breast is larger than the right=GIRL.
- Hair, leg hair, and fingernails growing fast predicts you are pregnant with a BOY. No noticeable growth=GIRL.
- Shape of your belly (Use in second and third trimester) is round like a basketball? BOY. The shape of your stomach is flat like a watermelon? GIRL.
- Carrying Low predicts that you are pregnant with a BOY. Carrying High means, you might be carrying a GIRL. (Again, use during second and third trimester)
Your baby’s heart will start to beat around 6 weeks pregnant, and your doctor will be able to hear it and measure the BPM (beats per minute).
According to this modern old wives’ tale, if your baby’s BPM is below 140, you may be pregnant with a baby BOY! If your baby’s heartbeat it above 140, this theory suggests you are having a baby GIRL.

This is a fun gender test to do at home or baby showers and gender reveal parties. Tie a ring to a piece of string or thread. You will need to lie down and hold it as still as possible above your belly.
If the string starts to move from front to back, this means you might be having a BOY.
If the ring moves around in a circular motion, you may be pregnant with a GIRL.

The hairline gender test is a very simple way to predict the sex of your baby. This will work only if you already have at least one other child.
Look at the back of your youngest child’s neck and lift any long hair to get a good view. Take note if their hairline comes to a point or runs straight across.
Folklore says that if the hairline at the back of your child’s neck comes to a point, the gender of your next child will be the opposite sex. If the hairline is straight, or flat, then your next child should be the same gender.
If you have a clan of boys, and are hoping for a girl for this pregnancy, check the hairline of your youngest and see if his hair comes to a point.
If you have a toddler kicking around, be it your own, or a friend’s tot, see if they are attracted to your baby bump. Legend says that if a little boy is interested in your belly, you are expecting a girl. If the little boy wants nothing to do with your baby belly, you will have a boy!
On the flip side, if a female toddler shows interest in your belly, you are having a boy. If she stays away from you, you may be having a girl.
We don’t know if it’s a natural attraction, pheromones, or just instinct. But give it a try!
Take some of your morning urine and mix it with baking soda. If it fizzes up like a volcano, you are having a boy according to this gender test. If it does relatively nothing, you are having a girl. If you want to know more about the chemistry of this test, read our Baking Soda Gender Test article.
Another urine test requires you to mix your pee with Drano, the drain clearing chemical. If the urine turns to a green color once mixed with Drano, it is said to be a girl. If the mixture changes to a blue color, it is said to be a boy.
If you have a pool or spa, you can use the chemical strips for this third urine test. Dip the test strip in your first morning urine. If the result is within the 4-6 range, it is acidic urine, which means you are having a girl.
If the strip reads within the 7-9 range, your urine is more alkaline and could indicate you are having a boy. If the range is in between the 6-7 range, the sex of the baby would be too close to call. These urine tests would be for entertainment and used in your first trimester and closer to 6-9 weeks gestation.
A common old wives’ tale is that the worse your morning sickness is, the more likely you are having a girl. Supposedly, the hormones of a female baby make the mom very sick. Boys tend to cause little, if any morning sickness.
However, according to recent studies, this trend and correlation of this theory apply only to pregnant women who have the most severe type of morning sickness called Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG).read more about Morning Sickness Gender Correlation.
